Spring Festival Of Small Breweries
Friday May 26, 2006, 5 to 10 p.m.
A lot is happening in our little area of the craft beer world.
When we challenged the status quo back in 1989 by exclusively serving only the finest micro-brewed products, no one else had yet dared to shut out Canada's big two (now foreign owned) breweries. Supporting local beer culture has gotten a lot easier over the years. Seventeen years ago there were only handful of micro-breweries, now we have a choice of well over one hundred products from small breweries in our "backyard".
We will be celebrating this diversity of choice at our Spring Festival and have laid down a challenge to our local breweries to surprise and delight us with new products and one-off creations. More details will follow in the May news.
Admission is free, samples will be sold for $1 each (all taxes inc.)
Irish Whiskey Tasting Results
How good can it get?
On Wednesday March 15, 2006 a few of our patrons investigated the world of Irish whiskey to determine if the difference between the regular and premium versions of the same brand are significant or worthwhile. This was purely an educational exercise that had nothing to do with getting a head start on the festivities which traditionally are observed two days after this event.
The results seem to indicate that if you want the best Irish whiskey from a particular distillery, price is a reasonable indication of quality. The only exception to this is Black Bush which finished lower than the lower priced Bushmills.
However, price alone will not help you select the finest tasting whiskey. The two highest priced whiskeys, Jameson 18 yr. and Tullamore Dew Heritage placed one-two. However, the regular Tullamore Dew finished a close third at about a third of the price of the top finisher - besting the premium priced Bushmills Malt and Jameson 12 yr.

Beer List Update
Over the past six months we have made a commitment to Craft Brewed Quality Standards for all of the products we serve (single batch brewing, all-natural and disclosed ingredients, no pasteurization). This has not limited the selection and variety that we can offer to you. Every month we feature at least two new beers.
This months additions to our draught list include Scotch Irish's Black Irish Porter (which will be followed by Corporal Punishment), Heritage Traditional Dark, Durham's Hop Addict, and F&M's Stonehammer Dark (dry-hopped, cask). Depending on availability Black Oak Pale Ale (dry-hopped, cask) will be alternating with Granite Bitter (dry-hopped, cask)
Our steadily expanding bottled list has thirty-six selections in addition to the thirty-five that are on tap. The Scotch Irish Tsarina Katarina Stout is the latest addition.
