On Wednesday April 25, 2007 we're putting our two regular, locally produced, chardonnays up against the world in a blind tasting. The Silver Peak 2004 Vailmont Vineyard and Henry Of Pelham 2006 non-oaked will be compared with the Chilean Santa Rita Reserve 2005, French Henri De Villamont 2004, Australian Alice White 2005, and Californian Beringher Stone Cellars 2005. We held our annual Irish Whiskey tasting on March 21, 2007, the week after St. Patrick's Day. This eliminated all of the Shamus-come-latelies and left us with a dedicated group of afficianados to sample the eight whiskeys "blind". As it turns out, three of the top four were already on our list and the co-winner, Tullamore Dew, was the lowest priced. Most of the attendees were impressed by the depth and range of different flavour profiles across the samples. It would seem that Ireland has a lot more to offer these days than just Bushmills and Jameson. The full table of results is available here. Alun Pigguns & The Dog Eaters Alun Piggins (former singer/songwriter for indie rock band The Morganfields) has released his latest CD, Awaken the Snakes, on Fred Eaglesmith's AML Records. Recorded in Alun's basement (Moldy Floor Studios), Chemical Sound, and Broadcast Lane, Awaken the Snakes has a more upbeat band sound than his folk-flavoured debut solo release, Balladesque, and includes a horn section, Beatle-like harmonies and a tongue-in-cheek duet with Oh Susanna (about finding love in a bar in Northern Ontario). Alun is supporting Awaken the Snakes with a back-up band (The Quitters) including ex-Morganfields and ex-Gandharvas. Saturday April 21 with Special Guests. Doors. Show time 10:30 p.m. Advance tickets are $6, available online. up to index | return to top Jory Nash + Josh Gabriel Spinning tales of discovery and confession, Jory Nash takes song writing seriously. Not afraid to be labeled a folkie, as he plays the part well, this gifted guitarist and lyricist also draws on a number of varied influences ranging from blues to country, to R&B and pop eventually settling in somewhere near contemporary folk. Regardless of influence his songs are draped in a wry sense of humour delivered with a focus that can best be described as personal, honest and direct. Nash comes across as a kind of modern day Nick Drake, entertaining with wit, iintelligence, and charm. Saturday April 28 with guest Josh Gabriel.
