Tangerine | Hey Vera | VSH | Jeff Buckley Tribute | Rob Szabo | Beautiful Senseless

Those with day jobs may be reluctant to check out a show during the week. Not to fear, here at nia the doors open promptly, shows start within fifteen minutes of their advertised time, and most weekday shows wrap up by midnight. Enjoy!

Linda M“With his raspy baritone, Tangerine lead singer Tony Matz sounds world-weary beyond his years and indeed, for a debut release, the level of musicianship on Tangerine (self-release) shows a maturity in arrangements and dynamics that many more-seasoned bands strive for yet never achieve. This two guitar, bass, drum combo has a bit of an 80’s sound with its chorused guitars and Matz’ almost Morrissey-like detachment, but Tangerine is no retro throwback. With great melodic hooks and engaging, mature lyrics, Tangerine has that intangible something that makes it stand out. This is an outstanding release by on of Pittsburgh’s best new bands. Catch them while you can.” - Pittsburgh Magazine

Tangerine appears with The Cities and Sara Kamin on Thursday January 9. Advance tickets are available.

Local Toronto popsters Hey Vera have found the crucial melodic balance with their blend of roots, groove, etherial vocals, country twinged guitars and heavy grooves. The band move from catchy hooks to full out raw jams without anything missing in the translation. Hey Vera has emerged as an exciting live act, tight and full of pop surprises.

Advance tickets are available for their next show with Natasha Alexander on Saturday January 10.

quill + tolhurstVSH are the powerhouse writing team of Suzie Vinnick, Kim Shepherd, and Elana Harte.

Crossing blues and folk with heavy pop hooks these three bring an electric energy to the stage. Refreshingly raw and full of attitude, they skillfully play off each others chunky rock riffs while blending tight vocal harmonies and a collective sense of humour. .

Advance tickets are available for this Friday January 16 show with Laura Ricker and Alana Levandoski also performing.

Purple Voodoo Productions and Mazurka Music present the 3rd Annual For The Love Of Buckley festival, three nights of music in tribute to the late cult hero Jeff Buckley.

From Jian Ghomeshi (Moxy Fruvous) to Superhalo, thirty four different acts over three days will present their own take on their favourite Buckley tunes. What would inspire such a huge event for someone with only a couple of albums to his credit? You only have to ask anyone who was lucky enough to be at C'est What on February 14, 1994 when Jeff Buckley made his Toronto debut before a crowd filled with music industry heavies and absolutely silenced them with a jaw dropping solo set. Ten years later people still talk about that show.

Advance tickets are available individually for the shows on Thursday January 22, Friday January 23, and Saturday January 24. A festival pass is also available by purchasing a "Reserved Seating" ticket for any show.

Rob Szabo is at the musical core of local Toronto rockers Placticine and has put in time with Groove Daddys and currently hot on the promo trail for his debut solo effort.

Szabo's live show is both cutting and melodic, a lyrically sardonic combination of power pop and edgey guitars. Truly cool. Undeniably catchy. Never cliche.

He appears with Scott Cooper and Anastasia McCabe on Thursday January 29. Advance tickets are available.

If "writing about music is like dancing about architecture. Beautiful Senseless lies somewhere between a pirouette and a flying buttress..."

Beautiful Senseless straddle the fine line between Can-rock Rheostatic influences and an all-together rootsy vibe that has a rare committment to "finding the song."

Advance tickets are available for their next show with Natasha Alexander on Friday January 30.
