Whisky Tasting | Bourbon Results | Craft Beer Manifesto | Beer List Update

Robbie Burns Memorial Whisky Tasting

Our annual tribute to Scottish good taste delves into the question: What's In The Wood? From traditional sherry casks to Port, Burgundy, and American bourbon casks, single malts spend a lot more time aging in a barrel than in the still or in your glass. On this evening we will compare six whiskies with different wood finishes and raise a glass or two the famous poet.

The line-up consists of Glenmorangie Port Wood, Bowmore Darkest Sherry Casked, The Macallan Fine Oak, Glenmorangie Burgundy Wood Finish, Balvenie Port Wood, and Glengarioch Bourbon Barrel.

The tasting will commence at 7 p.m. Tickets are available in advance for $30 (all taxes and charges included) online.

On the eve of American Thanksgiving we held a bourbon tasting on Wednesday November 23, 2005 to salute of some of our neighbours' better attributes.

The tasting was held "blind" so that the reputation of the producer wouldn't affect the scores. Although Blanton's Gold Edition finished with top marks, the real find of the tasting was the Buffalo Trace which finished second but is almost one-third the price of the Blanton's.

Complete details are available online.

C'est What's Craft Beer Manifesto

C'est What will only serve beer that meets these criteria:

  1. Single batch brewing. The contents of each brew kettle are used for one brand only.
  2. All natural ingredients. The ingredients used should be easily recognized as “natural” and, if processed, must retain their essential character.
  3. Fresh. Beer tastes best fresh. Pasteurized beer will not be served at C’est What.
  4. Our draught list is Canadian made only.

radioBeer List Update

Since we opened in 1988 it has been our mandate to showcase "True Local Flavour." With the formation of the association of Ontario Craft Brewers (OCB) we have made the commitment to offer our customers at least one brand from each member brewery as long as the brew meets the standards set out in our Craft Beer Manifesto.

Some recent additions to our draught list include Gritstone Ale, Red Leaf Lager, and Neustadt Cask Porter.

The Hot Five Jazzmakers - all six of them - are now in their seventeenth year of Saturday afternoon residency at C'est What. Their style derives from the pre depression era encompassing classic and revivalist jazz, spirituals, blues, and ragtime. Covering artists from Louis Armstrong to Jelly Roll Morton.

A good natured delivery, frequent guest appearances by touring traditional jazz and blues musicians have helped develop a solid regular following that makes each performance a social event. In New Orleans they were awarded the Freedom of the City. They have toured North Germany twice, and have been featured at France's prestigious Marciac Jazz Festival. They have also represented Canada at the Edinburgh International Jazz Festival in Scotland.

Their recordings include six CD's, the most recent of which is entitled A Little Bit of New Orleans with New Orleans-born guest star Gregg Stafford on trumpet.

The Hot Five Jazzmakers continue their weekly Saturday matinée. Show time 3:00, Admission $5.
