What's Up

Summer Hours | Visual Health Risk | Our Walls And Power Walls
Get Real: Featured Acts

Summer Hours & Menu

Monday to Friday - 11:30 to 2:00
Saturday - 2:00 to 2:00
Sunday & Holidays - 5:00 to 2:00

antojitosThe warm weather is here with vengeance and we are intent on enjoying our all too short summer. C'est What is opening a little bit later on weekends and holidays until mid-September. During our open hours the menu is a little bit lighter this season and our cellar digs are a cool refuge from the heat, especially on those all too frequent smog advisory days.

In the Fall a new and improved breakfast menu will re-appear along with our usual 11:30 opening time.

Visual Exposure Risk

The Minister Of Health, George Smitherman has said that he is quite pleased with his anti-smoking legislation. It is called Bill 164, The Smoke-Free Ontario Act, and will ban our separately ventilated smoking room as of May 2006.

no smokingThe stated goal of Mr. Smitherman's pet project is to put an end to exposure of the public and workers to second hand tobacco smoke. There are exceptions: if you work at a nursing home you may still have to enter a smoking room, if you work in a restaurant patio customers can blow as many smoke rings at you as they like, and of course anyone who tries to enter a pub will have to run a gauntlet of smokers on the sidewalk just to get in the door.

By continuing to allow smoking on patios while outlawing the safer alternative of separately ventilated smoking rooms, proponents of a complete ban on tobacco use may be hoping to gain support for more restrictions in a couple of years.

The reason that our Toronto Board Of Health approved Designated Smoking Room, which completely isolates tobacco smoke from the non-smoking public and workers, will be deemed a health threat next year has still not been explained to us. Despite numerous requests Mr. Smitherman, who is our M.P., will not discuss the legislation.

Apparently visual exposure to customers in our smoking room is worse for your health than actual smoke on the patio of one of our neighbours.

Those with day jobs may be reluctant to check out a show during the week. Not to fear, here at C'est What shows start within fifteen minutes of their advertised time, and most weekday shows wrap up by 11:30. Enjoy!

bill colgateBill Colgate And The Urbane Guerillas

Bill Colgate is an award winning singer/songwriter from Toronto.  The Urbane Guerillas are Cam MacInnes (dobro & guitar), Rob Clarke (upright bass), Shiraz Tayyeb (drums) and Vezi Tayyeb (keyboard).  Together, they are creating some of the most innovative roots music to be heard in Ontario today.  Imagine an unholy marriage of the lyrics of Lyle Lovett to the musical muscle of Bruce Springsteen.

In 2002 Bill's song Let It Be There was awarded 2nd Grand Prize Overall, out of 32,000 entries, in The USA Songwriting Competition.  This is the highest placing ever by a Canadian in the history of the contest (including such notables as Shirley Eikhard and James Keeleghan). Greg Quill of The Toronto Star has called Bill Colgate "an important and committed new talent on the Canadian independent music scene" and, with a great band like The Urbane Guerillas to complement him, who can argue?

Bill Colgate And The Urbane Guerillas appear with Ancient Chinese Secret on Saturday July 9. Show time 10:30, Admission $5.

jeen o'brienJeen O'Brien

She was recently a semi-finalist in the International Songwriting Contest for her song Goodbye Glory.

Transcending audiences into a magical world while reciting someone elses everyday life is no small feat. O'Brien’s dynamic live show and her hook laden musical arrangements will keep you humming her tunes long after the show has ended.

Jeen O'Brien plays C'est What's Next on Thursday July 21. Show time 9:30, Admission $6.
