nia to Close?
At least some of the rumours are true. nia is under threat. Without an "eleventh hour" deal C'est What will no longer have a music room.
Our lease in the music room expires at the end of August. The landlord at 19 Church St., Michael Tippin, is seeking to triple the rent. As a result, nia @ Cest What is being forced to close. The last show at this great little venue will be Saturday August 21.
Our thanks go out to the thousands of talented musicians that have graced our Church St. stage over the last dozen years. We will be hosting a celebration of the past, present, and future of the local music scene throughout August. Please stay tuned...

To Smoke Or Not...
With to opening of our smoking room on June 1 we are able to cater to all of our clientele.
Smokers will not be banished to loitering around the doorways but will have a separately ventilated section in which to enjoy the charms of Cest What. The new room includes a pool table, sofas, and both sitting and standing table areas.
Non-smokers will have the pleasure of a smoke free environment.
All customers will have the option to bring along their kids (or nieces/nephews) and initiate them into what has been up to this point a dark secret.
FAQs
- Hasnt smoking been completely banned in bars and restaurants?
Smoking is allowed in separately ventilated rooms and patios after June 1, 2004.
- Isnt the smoking room going to be a glassed off fish bowl thick with the blue haze of cigarette smoke like Ive seen at airports?
The Cest What smoking room is a comfortable section with the same cosy atmosphere as the rest of the restaurant. The air is changed in the room approximately every two minutes, so short of a bonfire, the air quality will compare with any patio.
- What if someone leaves the door to the smoking room open? Wont the smoke travel everywhere?
The door to the smoking room is on an automatic closer, it wont stay open. Even when the door is open to allow people to enter, smoke will not escape because air is drawn into the smoking room by the ventilation system. The smoke will not travel upstream.
Its a win-win situation. So please come and enjoy some True Local Flavour.

If you don't already know about Lori Cullen there may be some confusion. Is she a folky singer/songwriter or is she a jazz singer? Well, the answer is both.
Singing and writing her own songs since 1992, Cullen has taken great care to craft the words and music of each song. Sitting somewhere between folk and pop, echoes of Rickie Lee Jones, Joni Mitchell and Jane Siberry can sometimes be heard as Lori hopes it all comes together as a personal representation.
She appears at nia on every Sunday in June. Advance tickets are available for the shows on June 20 and June 27. Advance ticket holders will receive a free copy of our indie compilation CD Local Flavour 2003 featuring the song Bicycle by Lori Cullen.

Electric Meat is the name of a band that is busy extending the fine tradition of The Dead, Dave Matthews, Phish et al as they delve into their vast catalogue of jammy rock.
Rising from the ashes of defunct Toronto jam band Surface to Sound, Electric Meat picks up where STS left off digging the insrumental riffing-well deeper while they expand their repitoire of already roots flavoured rock tunes into full on 15 minute live remixes...a jam band.
Advance tickets are available for their next show which is opened by Chris Gartner & Great Bob Scott on Friday June 18.
A gifted songwriter and equally engaging vocalist, Royal Wood has a talent for creating a song that captures emotion and then transforms it into something almost tangible.
Sighting such notable influences as Tom Waits and Randy Newman, Royal Wood creates cabaret-pop lyrics and melodies that are fueled by emotion.
"A musical amalgam of recent heroes, with the poetry of one perhaps to come." - Kurt Swinghammer
Advance tickets are available for his Thursday June 24 show with Rae Spoon.

Toronto's own The Flints relish the golden age of popular music. A time when wearing a boa on stage bare chested wasn't immediately dismissed as "Eltonish", but rather celebrated for its audacity, attitude and altimately exaulted for it's musical sophistication...
Tipping their musical hats to a certain Brit easthetic (read Badly Drawn Boy etc.), The Flints are a band on a mission. To draw you into their twisted and ultimately wonderful world of hooks, hooks, hooks. Cool pulsing choruses and jangle pop sing-alongs set the mood and one os left with the sneaking feeling these guys will soon out-grow our sleepy little town.
Advance tickets are available for this show with Alfie and Dept. Of Foreign Affairs on Friday June 25.
