Get Real: Featured Acts

antojitos Menu

The shorts, skirts, and sandals have been out of the closet for a couple of weeks but the first full day of summer does not occur until Wednesday June 22. That is the day after the solstice and also the day that we unveil our summer menu. Comfort food can be light, refreshing, and as cool as our air-conditioned cellar. Check our website on the 20th for a sneak preview of the menu selections.

Catch your last C'est What weekend breakfast until the fall this weekend, June 18/19. Our summer hours starting June 25 are:
Monday to Friday - 11:30 to 2:00
Saturday - 2:00 to 2:00
Sunday 5:00 to 2:00

The New Prohibition Era

Reason and the reasonable both seem to be in short supply these days. The Ontario government is intent on passing their anti-smoking legislation which will ban our separately ventilated smoking room.

no smokingThis legislation was to unify the various bylaws from municipalities around the Province and "level the playing field" for bars and restaurants. Instead it will kick establishments like ours off of the playing field. To serve smokers (which still represent 20% of the population) after 2006 you will need to have a patio. A patio is one option we do not have, this is why we made the quarter million dollar commitment to build a smoking room that complies with the 2004 City Of Toronto bylaw.

As it stands right now our smoking customers have the option to hang out in their own room where they can happily blacken their lungs without bothering any innocent bystanders. After this legislation passes the smokers will be forced out onto the street spilling onto the sidewalk where passers by and our non-smoking customers will have to run the gauntlet to pass. Or perhaps worse (certainly for us) the smokers will decide to frequent an establishment with a patio where they can blow smoke-rings at anyone who has the misfortune to sit nearby or serve them.

Will this be an improvement for non-smokers? We'll let you be the judge.

hot five jazzmakersThe Hot Five Jazzmakers

The Hot Five Jazzmakers - all six of them - are now in their seventeenth year of Saturday afternoon residency at C'est What. Their annual Downtown Jazz Festival performance is you last chance to catch them at the club before they take their summer break.

Their style derives from the pre depression era encompassing classic and revivalist jazz, spirituals, blues, and ragtime. Covering artists from Louis Armstrong to Jelly Roll Morton.

A good natured delivery, frequent guest appearances by touring traditional jazz and blues musicians have helped develop a solid regular following that makes each performance a social event.

The Hot Five Jazzmakers play C'est What's Next on Saturday June 25. Show time 3:00, Admission $5.
