"Funky-assed bluesy jazz on the hiphop tip"

Injecting way-out guitar atmospherics around an air tight rhythm section, these guys update the past as they probe jazz, jungle, drum & bass, funk, blues - anything with a heavy groove is open game as they experiment and push the limits with their fresh sound.

Jukejoint combines acid-jazz and rap with a little psychedelia while adding their own flavour to greats such as Miles Davis, Thelonius Monk and George Benson. Their take on such icons only stands to highlight their own compositions that are guaranteed to get your feet and pulse going. The group is led by Steve "Chili" Grebanier (CHeeZBOXX, Punjabi By Nature) who supplies some rap n' rhyme between guitar licks.

Thr group was founded in the spring of 1995 with the notion that the intersection point of jazz and modern popular music, was one that needed further investigation. Their instrumental "make-up" is one similar to that of a "jazz band" (live drums, acoustic bass, piano/B3 & electric guitar); but they are a band heavily influenced by today's urban culture and music. Jukejoint performs not only their original jazzy hiphop compositions, but also funky re-evaluations of classic jazz tunes from the past. No samplers, sequencers or drum machines are utilised in the band's groove, they prefer the freedom of improvisation and group interaction to guide the music.

Their 1997 independent CD release , Choose To Groove, has been receiving ongoing airplay on college stations in Canada and in international markets such as, Portugal and Holland. Jukejoint has played at all of the major Canadian jazz festivals, were recorded live by CBC Radio in Ottawa, and were featured in an hour long television simulcast on MusiquePlus in Montreal.
