Peter MurrayPeter Murray, one of Canada's top-call bass players, has spent years backing up some of today's hottest singer-songwriters—from Ron Sexsmith to Damhnait Doyle— in clubs and concert halls worldwide. But now, all that time watching these masters has rubbed off.
This year, he's stepping into the spotlight: writing his own songs, touring them internationally, and producing a debut CD, with some of the songs already in rotation on the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. His first solo tour took him across Ireland in April and May of this year.
Critics agree. Those who have sampled his debut EP—Peter Murray vs. the Ants—describe Peter's songwriting as an eclectic blend of pop influences, putting inspiration from 70s and 80s rock into a modern voice and adding witty, intelligent lyrics. "I love the Steelydannishness of your sound," writes Ottawa Citizen music scribe Charles Gordon. "A really, really cool XTC-ish vibe," raves Steve Lawson, Howard Jones' bass player. Irish singer-songwriter Alan Dee comments thoughtfully: "Peter's music is weird and honest."
The sideman is now a frontman.
