Jennie
Stearns
"I'll
sing with her whenever I can. Jennie is the real deal; a
beautiful and rare writer. She breaks your heart and somehow
that becomes an enjoyable thing." ~ Mary Lorson
The
release of Jennie Stearns' first full length CD,
Angel With A Broken Wing, features her timeless
songs, mournful delivery, and tender observations. It has
been roundly praised in the regional press, and is receiving
regular play on college stations and farther field. Stearns
has supported Kelly Willis and Iris Dement,
and while her appeal to those audiences is plain to detect,
she has truly developed a style of her own.
Stearns
started writing songs at the age of 14 in her native
Massachusetts. She moved to New York State in 1982. She was
a founding member of the seminal roots band Donna the
Buffalo. For several years, Jennie led the group Tin
Roof, honing her gift for creating evocative,
intelligent stories, offered in an unforgettable voice that
hints at mysteries.
Her
songs have been adopted by musicians of various stripes.
Georgia Pine was covered on the recent Running
with Scissors release and Donna the Buffalo's did a
rendition of of Life is Strange on their current
Sugar Hill CD. Stearns recently appeared at the
Finger Lakes Grassroots Festival backed by Philidelphia's
excellent avant-hicks The Hix, with Mary
Lorson of Madder Rose and Kathy Ziegler
providing harmony vocals. Jennie performed a showcase at New
York City's Mercury Lounge in December with her
current band which includes her husband Richie
Stearns on tenor guitar and banjo, Gary Wright,
of The Hix, on electric guitar, veterans Rich DePaolo
on bass, Bill King on drums, and Mary Lorson
on harmony vocals.
