Wheat Beer Tasting

With the return of Denison's wheat beer months after the demise of the brew pub of the same name, we celebrated the advent of summer on June 25, 2003 with a wheat beer tasting featuring three filtered and five unfiltered versions of the style with representatives from Germany, Belgium, Alberta, Quebec, and Ontario.

The unfiltered or "white" styles all scored quite well, something which can not be said for the clear beers, with Germany's Hacker Pschorr coming out on top. A number of participants in this "blind" tasting mistook the Hacker Pschorr for the second place Denison's which is almost, but not quite, back to its former glory. The Denison's seems to be missing some of the nuances that made it popular on Victoria Street and is also a little heavy on the "white." Even more cloudy was the third place Wunder Weiss which is a fine first effort by Magnotta. Blanche de Chambly was surprisingly blanche leger, and its scores suffered as a result.

It would seem that too little or too much yeasty goodness is not as desirable as "white" just right.
